The Grisiana War of Secession: Grisiana Surrenders!

Yes, you read it right, folks! On July 29, 1861, as General Thomas's Union Army of the Bleunois prepares to launch a full scale assault on the city of New Gascony, hoping to finally batter the defenders into submission, General Polk accompanies the Mayor of New Gascony and the Governor of Grisiana under a flag of truce to discuss terms of surrender!  The news is met in the ranks mostly with joy and relief, knowing that they're that much closer to going home, and no longer have to sit in those terrible trenches! A few trigger happy artillerists make their disappointment known, but otherwise spirits are high in the camp. The conditions agreed upon are as follows: 1) The State of Grisiana will be used as a forward staging area/supply base for hostilities against the other States in Rebellion (being the southern neighbors of Bixissippi and Cadrabama). 2) In exchange for their Word of Honor that they will no longer pursue hostilities against the Union, all of General Polk's rem...

The Grisiana War of Secession - The Siege of New Gascony (Assault on 4 July 1861)

After the failed attack on the Union forces concentrating at Beleau, General Polk decided it would be wisest to move his men to the capitol of Grisiana, New Gascony and prepare defensive fortifications to make things as difficult-to-impossible for General Thomas to secure the objective of the campaign as possible. They arrived and began work on the fortifications on the 5th of June.  In the meantime, the combined might of Bleunois and Verdemedio continued concentrating at Beleau for the final push on New Gascony. The last columns arrived on the 6th of June, and they marched on their final objective, reaching the outskirts of the city on the 20th to find Polk's men dug in in front of the city gates. Work commenced on their own trenchlines shortly after arriving, with both Generals Thomas and Pryce irritated at each other for not bringing any Siege Guns. They're best hope would be to starve them into submission. In the meantime, and after some bitter disputes, Thomas sent Pryce...

The Grisiana War of Secession - The Battle of Beleau (May 22, 1861)

Image
As the final column crossed into Grisiana, General Richard Thomas received word from the Governor of Verdemedio that their borders were officially closed to all belligerents. Worried about his lines of supply, he made his way to the capital city of Verdemedio, San Manuel, to try and enter negotiations with the civil and military authorities for continued passage through the railway network in the southeast corner of the state. In the meantime, he had ordered the Army of the Bleunois to secure a secondary supply line into Masonville. The roads were poorer that way, but at least then they could have a means of transporting provisions to the Army, and a means of bringing all prisoners out of the reach of Rebel forces. They did so with gusto, engaging in numerous skirmishes to secure the town of Rossburg and the village of Belleau, establishing the new supply line into Masonville. They even captured Toulouse and Liege for good measure, with the determination to hold Beleau, a railway ...

The Grisiana War of Secession - The Battle of Carentan (3 May, 1861)

Image
As Brigadier General Daniel Harvey Bragg sat down to breakfast, he heard a commotion outside his headquarters. He heard the familiar voices of his staff officers, and from the muffled sounds they were questioning a recent arrival. He heard Captain Sam Gorree let out a profane exclamation in panic.  This will not do, even if he is still just a boy , Bragg thought. He's much too excitable.  He stepped out the door to correct the young Captain on his un-gentlemanly language and was met with startled salutes form his staff officers (among them a knowing Captain Gorree) and a sweat drenched, disheveled Private. He couldn't place the lad's name off hand, but he recognized him from the 5th Grisiana Infantry. "S-sir," Gorree stammered out, "t-this man is from the picket line. He insisted on reporting direct to you, sir." "What is it, son?" "General Bragg, sir, I beg to report that the enemy has been sighted on the way here to Carentan, sir! A ful...

The Grisiana War of Secession - Preliminaries

Image
A few months back I bought a couple of books: Neal Thomas's One-Hour Wargames, and William Silvester's Solo Wargaming Guide. I quickly wanted to put the Guide to good use, and cooked up a map for an ACW campaign: Now this is the map I've been using for the campaign, and it can be a bit hard to read (mostly because of my chicken-scratch handwriting that at times I even struggle to decipher), so here's one that hopefully is a bit easier to read: So what's brought about the recent unpleasantness between Bleunois, Grisiana, and Verdemedio, you ask?  Grisiana decided they'd had enough of this whole "Union" thing and wants to part ways. They may be parting ways over any number of things. Like if pineapple really belongs on pizza or not. You know, the deep, serious issues we all wrestle with. Either way, it just seems fitting considering it's being fought with ACW figs, so why not? Diplomacy has broken down between Grisiana and Bleunois, and Bleunois, kn...

The Battle of Morristown

Image
A couple weeks ago, Mr. Wargaming over at the Joy of Wargaming on the YooToobz launched a community wargaming campaign using a corner of Tennessee as the backdrop: The Sneedville War ! It's shaping up to be a knockdown drag out fight between the forces of Kingsport (the invaders) and the forces of Knoxville for control of either Sneedville or the enemy capital. He picked out the map, decided on the distribution of forces on both sides (and unit names) and commander ratings that match both Henry Hyde's Wargame Campaigns and William Silvester's Solo Wargaming Guide. He worked out a few different strategies for each side and left it to his viewers and commenters to decide on the operational plans of both sides. And he's leaving the resolution of the battles themselves in the hands of others, hence today's post! The Kingsportian Army of Rogersville, after taking Bean Station, marches south for its main objective of Morristown. Little do they know, that the Knoxvillian...
